Don't fear the Reaper! Part of an ongoing series inspired by the Danse Macabre — the medieval allegorical concept of the all-conquering and equalizing power of death, as expressed in the artwork of western Europe in the late Middle Ages (approx. 14th Century). Traditional Reaper imagery began appearing in Europe as it was dealing with the Black Death (1347–51), the largest pandemic of its time. The skeletal figure in clergy-like robes with a scythe meant to “reap” human souls, has been an enduring symbol for centuries — and continues to be a way for modern viewers to grapple with concepts of death, existence, being, and the afterlife just as our medieval ancestors did.
