It watches.
In Greek Myth, Ascalaphus was the custodian of the orchard of the Underworld. When Persephone was trapped in the lower world, and Pluto/Hades gave her permission to return to the upper, provided she had not eaten anything, Ascalaphus bore witness that she had eaten part of a pomegranate. In punishment for his observation he was transformed into the form of an owl, and became the bird familiar of Pluto/Hades, god of the Underworld.
