Welcome to the Macabre World of Michael Croteau

Hello and welcome, friend! I'm Michael Croteau, a Seattle-based artist who fuses decades of graphic design experience with a variety of traditional and digital art techniques to create macabre, creepy illustrations drenched in shadow and energetic hatchwork.
My work draws inspiration from art movements like German Expressionism, Surrealism, Art Deco, Art Nouveau, and design inspired movements like Bauhaus, 60's/70's Psychedelia, and the golden age of 20th-Century book illustrators. I'm also equally inspired by a grab bag of philosophy, metaphysics, genre weirdness (both trashy and elegant), the occult, Halloween, vintage ephemera, comic books, and pop-culture steeped in Horror, Dark Fantasy, & Sci-Fi nostalgia.
That's a heady brew of oddity, which I hope you'll join me in exploring! I invite you to take a moment to check out my portfolio, order a print or two, or get in touch if you have questions, comments, or ideas for a private commission or sweet collab. Or, if you just need to digitally scream into the void, that's ok too. How, you ask? As above, so below:
